Water behaves a particular way in the Triangle. Piedmont clay sheds a hard summer downpour instead of taking it in, so the runoff arrives fast, cuts channels through beds and carries soil off the property — and from Raleigh and Durham it heads for Falls Lake, from Chapel Hill and Cary for Jordan Lake. Dry creek beds, swales, rain gardens and corrected grade slow that water down and keep it on your land, which is good for the garden and for the watershed downstream.
